SUMMARY:Show Up For Wildlife on Oct. 27-28 in Olympia\, and Join Us for Happy Hour on Oct. 27
DESCRIPTION:Speaking at a Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting can be scary. But it is also one of the most effective ways to make your voice heard. For three minutes\, you will have the undivided attention of the nine people who set all the state’s fish and wildlife policy. \nAs we make progress toward wildlife agency reform\, Washington is being targeted by groups like HOWL for Wildlife\, which offers financial incentives to induce people around the country to testify at our Commission meetings. We need people like you to show up for Washington’s wildlife! \nAttend Meeting\, Testify\, or Both\nThe final in-person Commission meeting of the year will take place next Friday and Saturday at the Natural Resources Building\, 1111 Washington Street SE in Olympia from Friday\, Oct. 27 through Saturday Oct. 28 (full agenda here). Please show up for wildlife however you can: \n\nIf you can attend in person\, please do! Even if you don’t speak\, just your presence will show the Commissioners you care!\n\n\nWhile you are there\, drop by Three Magnets Brewing Friday evening (5:30 to 7 p.m.)\, to lmingle with other wildlife advocates at a happy hour co-sponsored by Washington Wildlife First\, the Northwest Animal Rights Network\, and the Endangered Species Coalition.\n\n\nIf you cannot travel to Olympia\, please consider testifying via Zoom. Remember\, your speech does not need to be long or complicated!\n\nCommission to Address Wolves\, Bears\, and Squirrels \nWe expect speaking slots to fill up quickly\, so if you wish to testify\, please register soon. Consider speaking about one of these important issues: \n\nThe Commission will vote on our Wolf Protection Rulemaking Petition at 11:30 a.m. Saturday\, deciding whether to take steps to protect state wolves from agency sharphooters. Although there is no public hearing\, you can speak about the rule during open public comment periods starting at 8:45 a.m. on Friday (Agenda Item 2) and 8 a.m. on Saturday (Agenda Item 11).\nAt 1 p.m. on Friday (Agenda Item 6) \, the Commission will take public testimony on a proposal to allow the Department to issue permits to kill black bears every spring for eating the bark off trees on commercial timberlands. This hunt will inevitably kill female bears and orphan their cubs\, especially because mother bears are most likely to “peel” trees in an effort to survive until berry season.\nAt 10:45 a.m. on Saturday\, the Commission will take public testimony on a proposal to classify the Western gray squirrel as a state endangered species (Agenda Item 13). Big timber is fighting this move\, but the gray squirrel needs help to survive. There may only be a few hundred left and they are quickly losing habitat to forest fires and logging.\n\nRegister Today!\nRegister today to testify either in person or via Zoom\, making sure to include the agenda item for the topic you want to address. \nAnd please click here to let us know if you are coming to Olympia\, if you plan to testify in person or by Zoom\, and whether you will be joining us for Happy Hour. We will keep you apprised of any new developments and assist if you need help developing comments!

SUMMARY:Conservation First? Lemonade-and-Learn with Washington Wildlife First and Northwest Animal Rights Network
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is supposed to “protect…and preserve” wildlife on behalf of all Washingtonians—an increasingly crucial role in the era of climate change and global biodiversity loss. Instead\, it focuses on serving hunters and anglers. As one former Commissioner commented: “What we do is produce animals for harvest\, we plant pheasants and fish\, we’re producing crops.” Meanwhile\, the Department permits the killing of wildlife essential to healthy ecosystems\, including allowing beavers to be trapped and drowned for their fur. Can a the proposed conservation policy finally put “conservation first”? Join Washington Wildlife First and Northwest Animal Rights Network to discuss how you can help create a Department of Fish and Wildlife that prioritizes conservation over consumption.

SUMMARY:The War on Apex Predators: Lemonade-and-Learn with Washington Wildlife First and the Mountain Lion Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about how you can help stop Washington’s war on apex predators. Did you know the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife facilitates the killing of about 300 cougars a year\, out of a population of only about 2\,300? That it enacted new rules increasing the number of bears killed each year by 50%\, even as its own biologists warned our bears are “especially sensitive to over-exploitation”? Or that it allows year-round killing of coyotes with no “bag” limits and few restrictions\, a policy only 16% of Washingtonians support? Join Washington Wildlife First and the Mountain Lion Foundation to learn how you can help stop Washington’s war on apex predators. Lemonade and light snacks provided.

SUMMARY:Howling for Change: A Week of Wildlife Action
DESCRIPTION:Washington Wildlife First needs your help to continue to be able to put together events such as Howling for Change Week in Seattle. We are the only organization devoted to bringing badly needed reform to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife\, and we have assembled a coalition of more than 60 local\, state\, and national nonprofit groups to support those efforts. But we also operate on a shoestring and depend on individual donations to continue. Can you help us ensure a better future for Washington’s wildlife? \n  \nThe Fish and Wildlife Commission is meeting June 22-23 in Seattle\nJoin us for a week of events around the Commission meeting including Wildlife Trivia Night! We will also host discussions with experts about wolves\, wild fish\, cougars\, and the Commission’s first ever Conservation Policy.\nThe Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission is meeting in Seattle on June 22-23! This will mark the first time in 25 years that the Commission has come to Seattle to hear what the people of King County have to say. We need to show how much people in Washington’s urban areas care about the state’s fish and wildlife\, and we are counting on you to help! \nThe Commission is supposed to protect and preserve wildlife on behalf of all Washingtonians. But the Commission has historically shunned the state’s population centers. In addition to snubbing King County for the past 25 years\, it has never met in Pierce or Snohomish counties—avoiding the state’s three most populous counties where nearly 4 million people live. \nWe hope the upcoming meeting in Seattle is a sign the Commission has realized that it has a duty to consider the values and interests of all Washingtonians. That is why it is so crucial for all of us who support Washington’s fish and wildlife to show up to make our presence felt and our voices heard. \nTo commemorate this landmark event\, Washington Wildlife First and several of our coalition partners are hosting a welcome room during the June 22-23 Commission meeting\, as well as a slate of activities throughout the week\, including meetings where people can learn more about Department policies harming Washington’s wolves\, wild salmon\, apex predators\, and beavers. \nPlease check out the full schedule for “Howling for Change” week below.\n \nUrgent: Washington’s 216 wild wolves are in danger. Click here to learn about the issues facing them and to comment on the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s recommendation to downlist them. \nSchedule for “Howling for Change” Week\, June 19-24\nThursday\, June 22\nWelcome Room @ Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission Meeting in South Lake Union \n\nTime: 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. We will open our welcome room more than an hour before the Commission meeting starts at 12:45 p.m.\, and keep it open during meeting breaks and after the meeting concludes at 5:25 p.m.\n\n\nPlace: Port Townsend Room\, Residence Inn by Marriott\, 800 Fairview Ave. N\, Seattle.\n\n\nDetails: We need your help at the first Seattle Commission meeting in 25 years to make sure the Commission knows how much people in this area care about our fish and wildlife. SUMMARY:WEBINAR: "Better than Idaho" isn't good enough\, Washington's wolves deserve a real future
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT \nWolves have returned to Washington after being wiped off the state map by the livestock industry. Unlike other Western states like Idaho\, the Washington public firmly supports wolf recovery. But the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is radically out of touch with the values of average Washingtonians\, and continues to use taxpayer dollars to kill wolves at the behest of a few livestock owners. \nJoin us for an online panel discussion about wolf management in Washington on Tuesday\, Sept. 27 from 6 to 7 p.m.   \nWashington should be leading the country in science-based wolf management. Instead\, the state continues to kill wolves in public forests on behalf of special interests\, while falling short of its promise to the public that it will employ effective nonlethal strategies to avoid conflict. \nThis summer\, the state Fish and Wildlife Commission defied Gov. Jay Inslee’s orders to adopt a rule to address these failures and bring accountability and transparency to the management of its endangered wolves. \nLet’s discuss what’s next for wolf management in Washington—and how we can turn the state into one of the best places in the country to be a wolf! \nThe event is free\, but preregistration is required. Register and then check your email for your unique Zoom link. \nPANELISTS \nSamantha Bruegger\, Executive Director\, Washington Wildlife First.  Sam will moderate the discussion. Samantha previously focused on carnivore issues across the West as the Wildlife Coexistence Campaigner at WildEarth Guardians\, and now leads our campaign to reform Washington’s wildlife management. \nClaire Loebs Davis\, Attorney\, Animal & Earth Advocates. Claire has taken the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to court several times to try to halt its killing of wolves. \nAmaroq Weiss\, Senior Wolf Advocate\, Center for Biological Diversity. Amaroq is a biologist\, former attorney and one of the nation’s leading wolf conservation advocates.
